Swiftwater Bridge

Built in 1849, the Swiftwater Covered Bridge spans the Wild Ammonoosuc River in Bath. The 158-foot, two-span Paddleford truss is the fourth bridge to stand at this site, following earlier structures destroyed by floods. After decades of repairs and reinforcement, the Swiftwater Covered Bridge underwent a major rehabilitation in 1998 by Wright Construction under the guidance of Hoyle, Tanner & Associates. The project repaired the trusses, abutments, and pier, replaced the floor beams and decking, and restored the bridge to its historic pre-1900 configuration while meeting modern safety standards.
