Groveton Bridge

Built in 1852 by Captain Charles Richardson and his son, Charles P., the Groveton Covered Bridge spans the Upper Ammonoosuc River in Northumberland. The 126-foot Paddleford truss with arches was maintained for decades by the nearby paper mill before a major restoration by Milton S. Graton and his son Arnold in 1964. The $9,945 project restored the bridge’s camber, replaced deteriorated structural members and arches, and addressed a leaking water main. More recent repairs in 2020 and 2021 included portal and structural work and removal of the remaining sewer line. With its water and sewer lines now removed, the Groveton Covered Bridge is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
