Carlton Bridge

The Carlton Covered Bridge was built in 1869 and crosses the Ashuelot River in Swanzey. The 67-foot, single-span Queenpost truss has an unknown builder.

For many years, the bridge was known as the Whitcomb Bridge, with town reports referring to it as the David Whitcomb Bridge. It was later named for Philip P. Carlton, who owned property along the road east of the bridge. The name is often incorrectly spelled “Carleton.” The bridge is maintained by the Town of Swanzey.
