Keniston Bridge

Built in 1882 by Albert Rumrey Hamilton and a local crew, the Keniston Covered Bridge spans the Blackwater River in Andover. The bridge replaced an earlier structure damaged by the Great Freshet of 1869 and underwent major repairs in 1949 after developing significant cracks and sagging from an overloaded load limit.

A thorough rehabilitation in 1981 by E.D. Swett, Inc., with engineer Louis Scheyd, included replacement of sixteen floor beams, repairs to the trusses and roof, reconstructed abutments, and the installation of two steel I-beams beneath the bridge. A 2020 inspection found significant rot in the lower chords, with a full rehabilitation estimated at nearly $1 million.
